Drawing with Light: An Introduction to Subtractive Drawing Workshop

  • Delany Arts 20 Center Street Yarmouth, Maine, 04096 USA (map)

Drawing with Light: An Introduction to Subtractive Drawing Workshop: What happens when you begin a drawing with darkness instead of a blank white page? In this workshop, we'll explore subtractive drawing using a selection of materials including charcoal, pastel and graphite. With this technique a surface is covered with pigment  and an image gradually emerges by erasing, lifting, and re-adding material.

Through short exercises, we'll experiment with different ways of creating light, shadow, texture, and edges before using the technique to create a finished drawing. Working this way shifts the focus away from outlines and toward seeing shapes of light and dark, making it an approachable and surprisingly forgiving way to explore observational drawing.

Students will be encouraged to bring reference images of their own choosing; however, images will also be provided as well as objects for still life work.

No previous charcoal or drawing experience is necessary. All levels are welcome.

  • 1 Day Workshop
